Team Academy Winter Fight/Competition Results

Another great season of competition brought with it both adversity and triumph. We’re so proud of all our Team Academy competitors that continue to push themselves and grow as martial artists in victory and in defeat! Here is a quick summary of this winter’s results:

RFA 24 (3/6/15)

  • Ben “Silver” Smith captured the RFA welterweight title with a TKO from punches
  • Dan Moret suffered a defeat by unanimous decision
  • Andre Tieva got caught on the receiving end of punches and lost his fight via TKO
  • CT Bailey took a loss in a unanimous decision

Coach’s Corner: 10 Nutrients Proven to Make you Feel Awesome

Hello Team! You may be thinking, “What’s up with all the nutrition articles?” Well, you may not know this, but nutrition is one of the most important aspects of losing weight and staying in shape. No matter how much you train, if you’re eating garbage you’re not going to optimize your results.

Here are 10 key nutrients that have been scientifically proven to improve your health and make you feel great!

Calcium

Did you know that calcium is the most abundant mineral in our bodies? It helps maintain strong bones and healthy blood vessels! Don’t like milk? Try adding collard greens, kale, or plain yogurt to your diet!

Chromium

There are only trace amounts of chromium in our bodies, but it’s important in metabolizing food. It also plays a huge role in helping the brain regulate emotions and your mood. Feeling depressed? Try adding broccoli, potatoes, and turkey breast into you weekly meals!

Folate

AKA B9, this nutrient is a key player in creating new cells and supports serotonin regulation. Not having enough folate in your diet can make you feel more fatigued than normal. Boost your folate levels by eating spinach, avocado, and brussels sprouts.

Iron

Vitamin D

Meet: Clarence Jordan

Clarence has made the Move to Minnesota to train at The Academy, here’s a little bit about him.

1. Where are you from?

Waterloo Iowa (same town as wrestling legend Dan Gable)

2. What is your background in athletics/ MMA experience?

I wrestled in high school and college , then I started training for MMA my Junior year of college. (Clarence is now 2-1, in his Pro career)

3. What made you move and join The Academy?

I was invited by my manager Jeremy Bjornberg to come visit the gym and after one practice I knew this was where I needed to be. Tough training partners and great coaching.

4. What do you like most about the Team/gym/program?

I like being around like minded individuals. I want to be a champion and it helps me stay motivated to be around others who have the same mind set and work ethic that I do. Iron sharpens iron!

 

Mike Richman Moves on to tournament final over “popo”

Heated, is a good way to describe the official Bellator weigh in between Academy Product Mike Richman and Alexandre “popo” Bezzera. After both men weighed in “popo” got in Richmans face and made contact, Which prompted Richman to give him a solid shove. Immediately after the stage was swarmed by people from both camps and bellator officials holding them back from each other. The next night there wouldnt be anybody holding them back.

 

The first round saw a relentless takedown attack by Bezzera for the first minute, Richman was able to stuff the first couple attempts and even countered with a front choke off of Bezzera’s single leg takedown attempt. A front choke in which Mike is known for hitting alot in the practice room. After getting Richman to the ground “popo” got Mikes back and would stay there for the rest of the round attacking with choke attempts and punches from behind. (10-9 Bezzera)

Round 2, was all hands. Richmans world class striking would be the story of round 2. Bezzera showed his grit and concrete jaw by staying on the feet and trying to go punch for punch with the superior boxer, of course he attempted to shoot for a takedown ocassionally, but Richman wasnt allowing it. Bezerra’s head was knocked back countless times by stiff jabs and quick straight left hands by the deadly southpaw ( 10-9 Richman)

Round 3 left off where round 2 ended, on the feet for the first minute and a half. Finally Bezzera secured the takedown he had been searching for. Ground and pound at first from top position, then getting richmans back again he attempted more rear naked chokes. Richman would get back to guard then spring up to his feet and throw everything but the kitchen sink at Bezzera for the final minute of the 145 lb. tourney quarter final.

In easily the fight of the night and possibly fight of the tournement so far. Mike “the Marine” Richman takes the 29-28 split decision victory to move on the the Finals of the $100,000 tournement. His Opponent will be Magomedrasul “Frodo” Khasbulaev (20-5) a super tough Russian with a hard hitting free style approach.

At 31 years old, Nick Compton is no where near done with his fighting career.

After A very busy 2012 where he fought 4 mma bouts, 2 boxing matches, and 1 kickboxing bout, Nick is getting his shot at a Big time televised Event. Nick will lock horns with Bobby “super duper” Cooper(5-3) at 155 pounds for Ressurection Fighting Alliance on AXSTV Jan. 18th at 9pm cst.

All of his Teammates and coaches will tell you Nick is mentally and physically ready for this fight. Nick will also tell you that he is excited for the opportunity that fell onto his lap after Teammate Dan moret, who was originally slated to fight Cooper, had to pull out due to injury just two weeks before the fight. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase my growth as skill as a fighter and it means I’m closer to accomplishing my goals in the sport.”

Although he has a sports background of the normal Football,Baseball, Basketball type, Compton fights like hes been training since childhood. After starting his career with minimal training, Nick started developing his game with Former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne and other training partners before joining the Academy in Late 2011. Since then Nick has been growing and improving daily “I got started when Dave Menne brought me and a handful of fighters in to train during our training
camps for upcoming fights.I really liked the team and the structure the Academy provided so I didn’t want to train anywhere else after that”

When asked what style of fighter he is ” I would say I’m a Kickeboxer/BJJ fighter, but mainly I fight to finish the fight” And finish the fight is what Nick will be looking to do against Cooper who is a taller kickboxer by nature and who will also be moving down to 155 pounds for the first time in his Career. Compton was scheduled to fight one week later in a local show at 145 pounds, but gladly accepted this fight in which he is confident is his for the taking.
